The Cedars

The Cedars is the largest private wildlife sanctuary in the Kangaroo Valley situated within one of the most picturesque Valleys in Australia. As a luxury retreat for discerning travellers, The Cedars is geared toward minimising the human impact on its surrounding ecosystems in support of conservation efforts. For travellers whose respect for nature propels them to walk "with light footprints" and for those with a bent for adventure, exercise and the great outdoors, The Cedars holds a very strong ethos in protecting this prime candidate for a World Heritage area for the years to come.

The Accommodation

Cedars Cottages provides accommodation in four beautifully appointed self-contained 1 BR, 2BR and 3 BR cottages, each accommodating from 2 up to 8 people. Each cottage features a traditional Australian farmstead verandah overlooking superb breathtaking views of the Kangaroo Valley. Cottages are well appointed with indoor and outdoor cooking facilities, bright ensuite bathrooms, and generous living spaces to enjoy the peace and solitude of country life.

The History

Since settlement in the 1860's, The Cedars' land has been used primarily for agricultural purposes. The property first came into being at this time following an original land grant of 226 acres.

In those days the farm was entirely self-sufficient and the family ran dairy cattle for milk and cheese, sheep for wool and meat, pigs and poultry, as well as an orchard and a comprehensive vegetable garden. Collecting water from the creeks on drays pulled by bullocks was a day's job on its own. The area has always been one of the original sources of Australian cedar timber, driven to market by bullock- teams. There are still many fine cedar trees standing throughout the property.

Today, The Cedars is over 1,200 acres in area which straddles the Barrengary Creek and is enveloped by the Morton and Buderoo National Parks. Still a working farm and home to the famous Australian Shire Draught horses, The Cedars' land continues to be managed as a highly successful cattle-breeding enterprise producing prime veal for the domestic market.
